bringsassured happiness.As astudent majoringin ComputerSoftware,I beganmy odysseyfour yearsago.Now,after theinitial mysticismwas graduallyunveiled,my curiosityremains the same.Indeed,having enteredthis splendidcomputer world,I ammore thangreedy for something new.From thebeginning of my study,my endeavorwas fixedon the underlying branchesof Computer Science,particularly SystemSoftware development.Novel applicationson othersplatform maybe fruitful,but I think itsmore appealingto actas anindependent“manager”.In fact,mathematics,OS,DBMS andmodern compilerare allthe examples,any breakthroughof whichwould pushforward thewhole industry.Individuality is achieved inthis uniqueposition.My pacestoward thisgoal arealways steady.As mathematicspermeates tothe everycorner of Computer Science,I ameager tosee howit functions.I tookcourses offeredby theMathematics Departmentincluding MathematicalAnalysis andAdvanced Algebra.The curriculumalso coveredDiscrete Mathematics,ProbabilityStatistics andTheoretical ComputerScience.As supplementto myscope ofknowledge,I learnby myselfCombinational Mathematicsand theScience ofProgramming.This reallymade ahard periodof time,but theharvest wasrewarding.I cometo understandthat eventhe mostirrelevant softwaredisciplines havethe originsin common.The importanceof FracturalGeometry inComputer Graphicsis alreadyobvious.What ifa stepfurther towardTSP orBin PackingImmeasurable.Then camemy favoritetopics:Operating System,Compiler andDatabase.I workedhard andderived bitsofmyown insight.In fact,I wasgreatly encouragedto findsome ofmy ideassuccessfully implementedin the corresponding courseprojects.My finalgrade isstraight“As”in thesecourses.In short,although myexperience inComputerScienceis stilllimited,I believeits depthis wellaccessible.As myadvisor,Prof.Fang Yu,put itfiguratively inone ofhis lectures:“It makesno differencewhether ahunter captures5or7”rabbits.What countsisheknows howto usehis gun.”IthinkI can be thequalified shooternow.In my undergraduate years,I haveearned variouskinds ofscholarships,among whichwere“Peking UniversityFellowship”and“Excellent AcademicScholarship”.My overallGPA ranksupper10%among48students ofthesamegrade.Because ofmy satisfactoryperformance,I wasgranted thehonor ofentering thegraduate programat Peking University directly,waived ofthe admissiontest.In retrospect,my workload isalways heavybut itis worthmy timeof effort.Presently,I haveboth adequatetheoretical understandingand richprogramming experience.READY IAM.Of allthe subareasofComputerScience,my majorinterest isparallel processingand therelated compilerconstruction.The terminologyof parallel processing cameto mewhen Iread anarticle aboutdigital circuittesting.According tothis article,there existmany serialapproaches of solving theautomatic testpattern generationATPG problem.Though certainmethod ofsolving ATPG sometimes proved efficient,the computationtime fora methodofsolvingATPGsometimesprovedefficient,the computationtime fora completeresult isintolerable.Then aparallel processingmachine isproposed.Using parallelizedATPG method,this NPcomplete dilemmais ingeniouslyhandled.After reading,I surprisinglyrealized thatparallelprocessingopened anew windowfor thecomputationally intensiveproblems whichprove intractablefor theVON NEUMANNArchitecture.You canalways firstsplit aspecific computationaltask intoseveral independentdivisions,then assigneach partto acertain processor.With reasonablepartition andproper synchronization,most gruelingscientific applicationscan bereduced tonormal scaleproblems.With theadvent ofthe multiprocessorarchitecture,compiler optimizationfaced anew challenge.A compilernot onlyhas totranslate,but itis alsoresponsible forgenerating parallel-processing instructionsfor higherefficiency.For instance,because aloops bodyoften executesmany times,loop providesa richopportunity ofexploiting parallelism.Therefore,finding anoptimum strategyfor loopsbecause ahot researchtopic.On thewhole,parallelism changesour viewtoward theconventional computerarchitecture sothat thecompilers constructionmust makethecorrespondingmodification.Because ofthis challengingcharacteristic,I choosethem tobe myinterest offuture study.Yet parallelprocessing isfar frommaturity.It hasbeen observedthat somesequential algorithmscan beeasily translatedinto fastparallel algorithmswhile someothers maynot.Is everysequential computationcanbedone efficientlyin parallelIf not,what propertiesresult insuch distinctionAnother unsettledproblem is:programming parallel computers nowis likeprogramming serialcomputers in the1960s.Programmers getlocked intoa particularmanufacturers computers.Is itpossible forus todesign ahigher levellanguage forparallelcomputersthat hidestheunderlyingmachine architecturefrom usersBoth arecrying outfor solution.Without advancedknowledge,I cando nothingbut wait.In orderto convertmyundergraduatestudy intofull play,graduate educationisanecessity.From thecollege guideand myadvisors recommendation,I ampleased tolearn thatyour departmenthas anacademic atmospherewhere originalityis appreciatedand individualpotential isexplored.It will be thebest placefor myspecialized study.If possible,my maininterest inthe futurewillbeinthefollowing areas:□Parallel processing,Compiler construction.□Distributed/concurrent systems,Operating system.□Machine learning,Automated faultdiagnosis.As myundergraduate educationis verybasic,if youfeel thatI ammore suitedforsomeother areas,any ofyour suggestionwould behighly appreciated.Upon thecompletion ofmy study,I wouldreturn toPekingUniversityand teachwhat Ivelearned tothe students.Then Ishall establisha researchcenter toexperiment newideas.It ismy ultimategoal tosee theChinese computerproducts leadingthe globalmarket inthe nextcentury.After all,the navigationis notover
